Exploring the Human Stories Behind the UK Justice System: FACT Liverpool's Resolution Exhibition

FACT Liverpool is currently hosting a year-long exhibition that delves into the intricate tapestry of the tough UK justice system. Named Resolution, this multiyear endeavor, supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University, invites visitors to immerse themselves in the experiences of incarceration through the lens of art and research.

Conceived in 2014, Resolution initially sprang from FACT's curiosity about the challenges faced by veterans reintegrating into civilian life. Over the ensuing five years, researchers and artists Melanie Crean, Katrina Palmer, Ain Bailey, and Amartey Golding collaborated with a spectrum of voices, including politicians, inmates' families, prison personnel, and criminologists from Liverpool, Rochdale, and York.

Their goal?

To create four unique installations that not only shed light on the complexities of life behind bars but also stimulate dialogue, shape public perceptions, and influence policy.

Running until June 2nd, Katrina Palmer's "On the Other Side" delves deep into the individual and collective identities intertwined within the UK prison system. It urges viewers to contemplate the power dynamics at play and the ripple effects on those ensnared within its grasp.

Similarly, on display until July 7th, DJ Ain Bailey's "FOUR (2024)" offers a sonic journey into the realm of incarcerated individuals' memories and emotions. Through a curated selection of music and sounds, visitors can weave together their own narratives, experiencing a glimpse of life behind UK prison walls.

Lastly, slated for August, the culmination of Resolution will manifest in Amartey Golding's creation—a chainmail sculpture crafted in collaboration with incarcerated men from HMP Altcourse.

This striking piece explores themes of trauma, personal narratives, and societal dynamics, serving as a poignant testament to the toughness, resilience and creativity found even in the most challenging of circumstances.
